Teeth that are decayed or broken can be cleaned and filled with a direct filling material chairside. This is usually done with a tooth coloured material so that your tooth will be restored to look as natural as possible. Occasionally, an amalgam (silver) filling may be suggested as the filling material of choice.
Wherever possible we will try and save your teeth rather than extract them. We understand that one of your own teeth when restored to optimal health will serve you better than a false tooth or replacement. If a tooth becomes abscessed or broken down so much that the inside of the tooth is involved then it either has to be extracted or root canal treated.
The treatment requires meticulous attention to detail in order to cleanse the infected canals before sealing them with a special filling material. Following the procedure, which can take one or more visits, your dentist may advise a crown or onlay to protect the tooth from future risk of fracture.
At RD Dental we are fortunate to have access to Devanshee and Vikesh Mody who both have a special interest in Endodontics and are able to treat more complex cases that may in the past have needed extraction. We are also able to accept referrals from other dentists who need advice for their patients. For more information on why many patients and dentists themselves are referred to RD Dental to have their root canal treatment undertaken please click here.
If a tooth is heavily broken down then a simple filing may not be sufficient to restore it and an onlay or an inlay needs to be constructed by our dental technician. These are stronger than direct fillings and are usually made from porcelain so that they will match your natural tooth shade. Inlays and Onlays are bonded to your teeth using a special adhesive cement giving an excellent seal and strength. Another material that is highly recommended for inlays and onlays is gold.
If your tooth is broken down, cracked or extensively damaged then a crown may be suggested to restore and protect your natural tooth. Dental crowns are also known as caps as they will cover all surfaces of the tooth. Crowns are custom made in a dental laboratory and the material used to make them will be discussed with you prior to their construction. Different materials are used depending on your cosmetic/functional requirements but most commonly we construct porcelain and gold crowns.
Veneers tend to be placed on the front surface of your teeth when simple tooth whitening or a filling cannot improve the appearance. Sometimes the tooth has an inherent discolouration or it is damaged beyond the limits of a simple filling.
Veneers have been used for many years to instantly transform smiles. A veneer is a thin shell of porcelain or plastic that is designed to fit precisely over the front surface of your teeth.
